About Project GOLD
Project GOLD (Global Opportunities for Leadership Development) is a strategic approach to the improvement of foreign language proficiency and cultural skills in critical languages, Arabic, Chinese, Persian, Russian and Urdu. It is based on an advanced interactive method of language instruction with particular emphasis on oral proficiency and cultural expertise and an innovative tactic for the maintenance of linguistic and cultural engagement over a student's academic, professional, or military career. NC State University functions as a hub for the UNC 16-campus system, vigorously recruiting ROTC students as well as non-ROTC students to our summer programs and maintaining their language experience after their return to their home campuses.
Our Summer Intensive Courses in Arabic, Chinese, Persian, Russian, and Urdu. The 6-week long courses are worth eight foreign lanaguage credits. They consist of morning in-class, structural, recitation and drill, component, as well as an afternoon immersive, practical, cultural experience. Cultural specialists and native speaking tutors provide additional individual language help, as well as authentic cultural engagement.
Scholarships are available to ROTC students—Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines—for the summer intensive language learning courses, as well as, for study abroad programs in any of the languages offered.
This website houses interactive multimedia resources in the target languages for flexible and adaptive learning, many of which are devoted to military life, interests, and real soldiers using foreign languages in the field. These resources are intended to augment in a very significant way the out-of-class exposure to language and culture of the Summer student and the extra-curricular exposure and retention of the Summer 'graduate' who has returned to his home campus.
Project GOLD is funded by a grant from Project GO, the ROTC Language and Culture Project, http://www.rotcprojectgo.org/ and is administered by the Critical Languages Institute, under the aegis of the NCSU Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and the NCSU Army, Air Force, and Navy ROTC Programs.
